Don’t Let This Happen To You

I recently got the type of email that I still dread, after eleven years of doing this work. It doesn’t happen often, but it hurts when it does.

One of my clients just passed away unexpectedly.

We’d been working together for 8 years.

Most recently he came to me to make some updates to his trust.

We had everything pretty much done, but he was waiting for a break in his schedule to do a final review and sign everything.

He wasn’t aware of any urgency to get this done. Wasn’t ill when he called me to make the updates. We had plenty of time.

Until we didn’t.

We’re doing our best with the documents he signed in 2014. We’ll follow his wishes the best we can, but ultimately the documents from 2014 are legally binding, and unsigned drafts from 2022 are not.

Please don’t let this happen to the people, pets, and charities who matter most to you.

Don’t put this off. We all have a deadline, we just rarely know when it is.
